CD Purchases

I haven’t purchased CD’s in a while, but Mrs. LP and I were able to send our boy off to a camping trip, and headed out for an adult dinner. After some decent Irish food, we ended up at local mega-electronics-and-media-chain-box. I usually hate buying CD’s and movies there, preferring to travel the little bit of extra distance to buy music at local hipster store, but I was too lazy to drive.

So here’s what I got:

Nekromantix: Dead Girls Don’t Cry (photo won’t load)

Psychobilly rockers putting forth a weak effort at best. Certainly not their best work. The Brought Back to Life disc was way better.

Jeff Buckley: Live at Sin-e

Decent multi disc set, offering a glimpse of Buckley in the pre-Grace days. Pretty raw stuff. It is interesting to see how his songs changed from inception to their final recordings.

Hank III: Straight to Hell

Well, of his three discs, this is my least favorite. It is almost like he is spending all this time posturing on the disc instead of giving some of the rockin’ country he did on his other two discs. There are a couple of good songs, and a couple of songs that left me scratching my head.

Drive By Truckers: Gangstabilly

Now we are talking! Everything that Patterson Hood touches is gold as far as I am concerned. DBT really does grab the essence of Southern rock and creates songs that ring out with working class themes. For those of us who grew up in the deep south, it is easy to recognize the characters in the songs, and possibly to even yourself in the music. This is the first DBT disc, and is almost 10 years old, but it is not dated in the least. This is the inly one I would highly recommend.

  1. You know, I didn’t enjoy Gangstabilly nearly as much as I did Pizza Deliverance. It has kind of slowed me down in looking into their other stuff. And even Pizza Deliverance tends to lose my attention sometime before G.G. Allin comes to town (funny as that is). But the first half of Pizza I love. Maybe I’m just not country enough.

  2. I tend to like the country stuff quite a bit, but do agree that I like Pizza Deliverance more than Gangstabilly.

I got to see them live about three years ago. I know they are on tour. If they come close to you, you have to check them out.
