My Life: A Bullet List

- Son got cut from Spring soccer at the middle school. This really sucked. Soccer has always kind of been his thing. His playing on a traveling team for the county park system, but getting cut at school stung for him.

- Baby had her first set of vaccines today. I think I was more upset than her. She pulled through like a champ, though. She is currently sleeping it off.

- Senior Pastor is now officially gone and this past Sunday was first Sunday flying solo. All went well.  Sermon was pretty good, if I do say so myself.

- Went to ELW workshop yesterday. I may actually blog this later. I was a little miffed that all the material presented was the stuff available from the preview packs, so we didn’t cover anything I didn’t know in that sense. It was nice to sing through some of the new service music and some of the new songs. It also became very clear very quickly what stuff would get used in our parish. I had one of our musicians, the chair of the Worship and Music team, and a retired yet active pastor from our congregation go with me.

- Mrs. LP is exhausted. I feel a little bad for her. Baby was a little sick Saturday and into Sunday (stomach bug) so Mrs. LP tended to the baby so I could sleep Saturday night prior to the alarm going off at 5:00 am for Sunday duties.  Baby feels much better, but apparently gave the stomach bug to me, so while the baby slept last night, I was up and down all night. Net result: very tired wife and mother.

- Nothing new on transition right now. Supposed to interview at this one place that I am less than excited about.

- Been reading the Philokalia for the past three months on and off. I am still sticking with the first volume, though the other three are sitting on the shelf of my home study. Interesting stuff in that Philokalia. Why am I so obsessed with monasticism?

- Not sure how I feel about WordPress at this point. I don’t like that I can’t monkey around with the template without paying for it. I know, it is only $15 a year, but still. It is free on Blogger. Of course, it is not nearly as flakey.

- I am thinking about using some of my continuing education money to buy half of Luther’s Works, and then maybe buying the other half next year.

- Speaking of continuing education, I am going to an Alban Institute course on leading in times of transition. It sounds like just what the doctor ordered for my current situation.

- Our conference meeting is tomorrow, and I think I am going to have to miss it (again). Truth is, I hardly ever go. It takes up a whole day, and with Lent starting this week, I need that time to do other stuff. Next month, I promise.

- Speaking of Lent, I haven’t decided what I am going to do this year. Mrs. LP suggested that we covenant to say EP each evening. Sounds good, but also a bit ambitious given our track record.

That’s all I got for now…

  1. I think it was setting 8 in the ELW that I did not like. (What I consider the “praise band setting”).

Our ELW’s arrived this week and we dedicated them this past sunday. It’s kinda annoying that some very regular service music is back with the hymns and not in the liturgy…..for the old lutherans no prob….but not very welcoming for visitors trying to find the right page and words.

  2. Wow, I’m exhausted just reading all that. Hope you and baby get to feeling better.

Btw, there are several WordPress themes that allow some limited modifications. Some allow you to use a custom image header (like mine) and most let you use widgets to customize your sidebar. All in all, I think it’s a decent trade-off.

  3. I’m on the ELW introductory committee in my synod (I keep meaning to post something about it, but always find something else…I’ll get around to it one of these days) and echo your sentiment about the script of the presentation not being much more than an echo of what came in the intro kit. I think the assumption of the folks that crafted the presentation was that people would not have taken the time to go through the intro kit…but by assuming the lowest common denominator, it kinda penalizes those who have checked the materials out.

Personally (and this is not my just toeing the pary line here), I think this hymnal is a billion times more “authentically Lutheran” than LBW ever was…and I love that even though it definitely has its shortcomings, there’s so many more resources in there that will be at the average layperson’s fingertips. I’ll be interested to read your blog post on ELW when you get around to it.

I echo RuthRE’s thoughts in disappointment with the “contemporary” liturgical setting (Setting 8). The Kyrie is great, but much of the other music in that setting sounds neither contemporary nor even singable.

    C’est la vie.

  4. I tooagree with you about the ELW workshop.

Per your comment on Luther’s Works, a former pastor of mine gave me his 55 volume set, which is in very good condition. According to him, I will need them much more than he does. Judging from the look of the books, they didn’t see much action, but it was a very nice gift from him.
