Did I Mention…

…that the transition pastor assigned here keeps quoting Marcus Borg? How do I make that stop? I keep quoting patristics back, and it doesn’t seem to be helping. Is garlic effective in a case like this, or does that just work for vampires?

  1. You know, I actually like Marcus Borg, but I don’t know that I’ve ever quoted him. He’s just not that pithy. Plus, while his general approach is pretty decent, he’s quite bad on the specifics.

  2. Derek the Ænglican Says:

You could test out your confirmation material concerning the Creed on the transition pastor…

  3. Garlic doesn’t really work in these situations. The only thing that seems to work is putting holy water in his coffee. But I’ve only tried it once before, I can’t say that this is the norm.

  4. That’s a disease. :-( I will pray for healing for the transition pastor. :-)

  5. I think that would be an interesting conversation: He quotes Borg, you quote church fathers, back and forth. Will we get a peek a transcript of this conversation any time soon? ;)

  6. your pastor is quoting an author that he/she understands in a profound way. a way that connects their faith with logic and reason. my hope would be that you find that same connection in the experiences of others.

  7. jon – welcome. you’ll find that most of what i write is merely sarcasm and harmless picking. please see standard disclaimer.

art – i want to write a one act play with that dialog, which would be pretty funny.

joshua – i was just out at the monastery today. heard their holy water is pretty potent. should of got some.

fr. chris – can you fly in for an anointing or exorcism or something?

derek – as you know, we just say the creed because it unites us with people and gives us warm fuzzies, not because it may actually be true.

andy – you’ve been in a west coast congregation too long. please take the next flight back east. i’ll pick you up at the airport for your deprogramming.

  8. I have never quite understood the fascination with Marcus Borg. Maybe it is a generational thing, or a personal issue of integrity (I would never say “I believe” if I didn’t believe it, no matter how ancient and nice a creed is). If I were going to quote a nice, revered document every Sunday morning for warm fuzzies, I think I would just as soon sing “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan than say the Nicene Creed!

  9. are you preaching tomorrow?

  10. no, karla, i am celebrating but not preaching. i preach next week.
