Could it be True?

Rumor has it that Pope Benedict XVI may attempt to defend…yes, defend…some of the reforms of Martin Luther…yes, that Martin Luther.

I am not really sure what will come of this, but it sure would be nice to have the Pope say, “Hey, Luther may have had a point.” I think it would immensely help ecumenical dialog. Read all about it here.  Tip of the Papal Crown to Pastor David, who is finally blogging again.

  1. He saved the joint statement, so I wouldn’t be surprised. Benedicti is after all Augustinian in his theology, and well, so was Luther.

  2. I holding off my excitement, until I actually see something from the pope himself or with his seal. But it would be mighty good for any sort of dialogue.

  3. The London Times didn’t get it right http://www.cwnews.com/news/viewstory.cfm?recnum=57062

But I do think that the Pope will write some positive comments about him this summer.

I did want to dispel one rumor – the Pope can’t life the excommunication sentence. He doesn’t have the authority to do so. Luther has after all received his reward whatever it may be.
