Nothing Theological to Say

No one has ever been able to accuse this blog of being a hotbed of theological reflection, but I can’t even remember the last thing I blogged that was theological in nature that was anything more than a quote here or there. Truth of the matter is that I just don’t really think I have it me. Sometimes my life seems so consumed by all things church related that I just can’t seem to muster up the ability to write in any meaningful or reflective way on the topic.

So, what have I been up to here lately?

  • Embracing the flexibility of mission work and spending time with my kids. There is nothing like being with them.
  • Trying to green up our home.
  • I planted an organic container garden on our patio (no fence to keep neighbors dogs away, so no in-ground garden this year). Tomatoes, green and red bell peppers, cucumbers, and a variety of hot peppers.
  • Shopping around for locally grown, organic, humanely raised/slaughtered meats. It is too late in the year for beef this year, but I already have my name on half a cow for next season. That is about 600 pounds of organic beef for less than $3.00 per pound. Do the freakin’ math!
  • Need to find a hog as well. Maybe a goat. I dig goat meat!
  • Been shopping for a new deer rifle. Probably can’t afford it for this season, as the one I want is like $1200. Of course, one deer would almost defer the cost in food savings alone.
  • Been trying to figure out some continuing ed. Filled out application for local D.Min. program. Now that everything is done for the application, I am feeling ambivalent. There is a real lack of other local continuing ed, and with small children, travel is neither practical nor desirable.
  • Planning a trip to Florida in conjunction with Mrs. LP’s meeting with her dissertation committee. Will get to see best friend in route!
  • I seem to have traded in Christian Century for Mother Earth News, and my latest copy of First Things is still wrapped in plastic and sitting on the floorboard of my pick-up. Yet I have read more from the Rule of St. Benedict here lately than I had in a year or more.
  • Trying to figure out a way that Mrs. LP can stay at home with the kids instead of going back into the classroom. We both want this (her especially), but we’re kind of in this cycle of both of us having to work…especially since we get our insurance through her job. (ELCA BOP insurance sucks is not as good as our state coverage.)
  • We still haven’t sold our other house. I spent last weekend up there doing some landscaping and such. This market really sucks. We may lose money on this when all is said and done. I have put a lot of hours into working on that house and I hate to see it all for naught.

Yeah, so that is why there isn’t so much church chat going on here. But if you need some, here is what little bit of reflection has gone on in my brain.

  • I dig B16. I watched a fair amount of the coverage of his trip.
  • Watching the Anglican implosion is no fun, so I quit paying attention. It is sad, really.
  • I read the ELCA Draft Human Sexuality Statement, and find it to be typically squishy committee talk. Yawn.
  • I’ve been trying to figure out the point of full communion agreements between a bunch of practitioners of open communion. Any thoughts?

That is all, I’ve got work to do.

  1. I’m still unclear on why buying me beer for several hours and talking about liturgical and biblical stuff can’t count for Continuing Ed.

    Maybe once I graduate…

  2. I think the “in Communion” deal has more to do with priests than with the Eucharist; can’t Lutherans and Episcopals change places and celebrate in each others’ shacks? And be hired back-and-forth, etc.

It seems to be administrative – for the employees, I mean – more than anything else…..

  3. Wow, you’d be considered busy even without the kids. You can keep your priorities straight: the blog comes last. Kids and wife first. Good for you.

  4. full communion is definitely about the pulpit/parish sharing/swapping, i think.

if we find pigs, i’ll let you know…course the cost of the trip may mitigate the price of the piglet =) our hog panels arrived today. our supplier thinks there is a high demand for porkers with the way the price of food is rising, but thinks there will be second litters being raised out soon. Now we need some grown up hens so we can have EGGS before our chicks get old enough. Yes, i will be a gentleman farmer deacon, soon to be priest before we know it!

  5. Actually, Kit, since I wrote this I may have a line on a pig and a half a cow for the Fall harvest, already processed. We have been wanting to get chickens, but the neighborhood association said no to free range chickens in my yard.

To all about full communion – I know there is some interchanging among clergy (Mother M has supplied for me in the past), but to switch “rosters” is still pretty cumbersome last I checked (yes, I once thought I might throw my biretta to the other team). the process may have gotten smoother recently, but in the wake of CCM, it was still tricky.

BTW…anybody else think the term “pulpit swapping” sounds a bit risque? ;-)

  6. ReverendYo Says:

Couple of tidbits, no free range chickens allowed, get a chicken tractor!

I have Mother Earth News copies going back to the 70’s, if you want to trade…or barter…

I have been “volunteered” to lead the discussion on sexuality at your former parish, …..HELP…..

and no, I don’t think pulpit swapping is risque, expecially since we will be discussing human sexuality this year.

  7. I read the ELCA Sexuality Statement… I had the same reaction.

  8. RevYo, the last round went pretty well, so hopefully this one will to.
